Unlike other areas and systems, the Lecco Metal and Mechanical Industry District qualifies as a process district rather than a product district.

Practically, District's identity does not lie in a homogeneous production but in extremely differentiated processes to cover a boundless range of products, components, treatments, and plants and automation to suit the required production processes.

It is rather one metal conversion process branching through different stage which represents the key to analyze the District's manufacturing system.
On the whole, it is an economic network comprising a total of 3,500 concerns, covering a wide range of different products obtained by processing different metals, tram iron to steel through to aluminium brass and different alloys, however having points of contact along several processing stages.
